Altbau Styling: Timeless elegance in Charlottenburg Berlin by Salty Interiors

Altbau Interior

EN:

The German word “Altbau” literally means an old building, refers to the historical buildings, usually designed in the Art Nouveau style. Their beauty and uniqueness is expressed through decorative wall and ceiling elements such as stucco, wooden floors, single or double casement windows, high ceilings, beautiful staircases, tiles, old ovens and some still have a pantry room which used to be a maid room for those residents who could afford a living-in-house maid back then. The Altbau houses usually considered to be those which were built till 1949 before the modern construction styles shifted to double glazing and concrete walls and ceilings.

Apartments in such old buildings are a stylists dream. The historical decorative Art Nouveau elements set a beautiful backdrop to modern nordic style interiors. Today’s example is an apartment from the 1900 in Charlottenburg Berlin.  Charlottenburg was an independent city to the west of Berlin until 1920 when it was incorporated into Greater Berlin and transformed into a borough, considered today to be a cultural center with many museums, the Opera and independent theaters. It is one area in Berlin where you can walk through the streets and be surrounded by beautiful historical buildings with Jugendstil touches.

The Berlin based scandinavian Design team Salty Interiors got to interpret this apartment with an interior styling both sleek and warm, modern and nostalgic. How they achieved this look and what tips they could give us for styling Altbau apartments, you can discover in our conversation:

Designsetter: Could you describe the Apartment a bit? What typical characteristics of the 1900 style remained and what was modernised? Do you know what maintenance is done to preserve the original characteristics of that area (the floor, ceiling, etc..)

Salty Interiors: The apartment is a renovated Altbau apartment of the art nouveau style, built in the early 1900s. This is widely noticeable due to its ornamental details, both on the outside of the house, but also in the staircase (which features beautiful statue busts), as well as in the apartments with its extensive stucco and decorations on the tile stoves. The floor of the apartment was completely renovated and a new wooden fishbone parquet was put in. This preserves the original characteristics of the apartment and makes the whole impression really live its art nouveau style. Other than that, the apartment was simply renovated and freshly painted white.

Designsetter: What makes old historical buildings appealing to interior styling? Is there a certain style or elements you would recommend for such Apartments?

Salty Interiors: These old beautiful Altbaus really speak for their own, and in our opinion they are the easiest to furnish and style. The tall ceilings and huge windows make the apartments extremely bright and airy, and we usually just look at the rooms and how they interact with each other, and according to that we’re choosing furniture pieces that fits the overall composition and layout of the apartment. What is really fun with this kind of apartment is that you can play around a bit, and choose furniture that has a bit of a soul and makes a statement. It is however important, as always, to know beforehand which materials and colour schemes your working with, so the apartment has an overall style and so that each individual piece fits together and makes a complete look.

Designsetter: How did you approach this project? Was it an intuitive approach or do you have a certain style that you usually apply to old buildings such this one?

Salty Interiors: For any apartment, our approach is always to create a nice and homey atmosphere, and making sure all separate items fit together. As mentioned before however, this kind of apartment gave us quite a lot of freedom to really be creative with the styling and here we were able to pick furniture pieces that made more of a statement. We focused on bringing in materials and textures that were a bit towards the high end side, and choose for insance vintage leather for the furniture, genuine wood and vintage persian rugs as the main materials in furniture.

Designsetter: Tell us the design process of this project. What was the central piece you started with in this apartment? And how did you build up upon it?

Salty Interiors: We knew already from the starting point that we wanted to keep the apartment very clean and sleek, and went slightly more into a “masculine” direction. Keeping the colours a bit darker, and adding less textiles than we usually do. We wanted to show more of the beautiful floor, and letting the apartment speak for itself. The artwork was also chosen with a bit more dark colours and high end style. The first pieces we sourced were the leather armchairs and daybed from Norr11, and based on the cognac brown colour and wood, we went on with choosing the matching rug, coffee tables and wooden furniture for the dining room. The colour scheme we choose for the dining, living room and kitchen were cognac brown, black, grey, brass and with a hint of dark green and marble white.

For the bedrooms in the back of the apartment it was a bit different. There we wanted to add a more feminine and cosy touch, with the colour scheme being light pine wood, blush, light grey and beige. We collaborated with the danish brand KARUP, and when we had decided on the bed, we went on with choosing all other objects in the room.

Designsetter: Are there any „typical Salty elements“ that you usually use as your signature style in this project? (I noticed the plants 😉

Salty Interiors: It’s a tricky question.. Our signature style hasn’t so much to do with specific furnitures or elements that we always use. However, of course we focus a lot on textiles and plants to create a nice, cosy and airy atmosphere. I guess the most important element is the overall use of Scandinavian clean and natural style, using sustainable and raw materials as much as possible.

Designsetter: What tips could you give to people who want to create a modern nordic interior in an old building?

Salty Interiors: Our number one tip would definitely be deciding on a calm and natural colour scheme and materials for your Altbau apartment. Using grey, beige, brown, straw, dark or light wood, wool, linen and cotton etc. goes really well with the beautiful style of an old building. When the basic colours and materials are chosen, you can move on to adding colour pops in any colour you want. For instance textiles in terracotta and blush pink.

Designsetter: What about this project are you most proud of?

Salty Interiors: We would say that we’re the most proud of the overall composition and cohesiveness of the styling. We are also really happy to be able to work with many of our favourite brands, and are really satisfied with the choice of furniture pieces.

We let the images from the project speak for them selves:

DE:

Designsetter: Was macht Euch bei diesem Projekt stolz?
