Stockholm, the nordic metropolis of tranquility

EN:

To answer the question „what is your favourite city“ many of us think about different factors such as „good coffee places“, „good weather“, „good places to eat organically“, „proximity to the water“, and so on. It is an individual preference after all.

After visiting Stockholm during this late summer, I was proved even more, that it is the so called „social atmosphere“ or „city culture“ is what leaves the strongest impression on us and makes us go back to places we love. How do the people who live in the city feel? How do they communicate and make us feel around them? Do we feel welcomed and can we just act naturally in the social norm of a certain city culture? For me, the perfect city is a place and its social culture in which I can feel natural, to act upon what reflects many aspects of my personality.

Today, I share with you four reasons why I love Stockholm and why I feel so well in this city. I also will give you some Stockholm Travel Tips for places to get a really good coffee and to enjoy a nice evening. I will leave you the addresses of all recommended destination in the end of this article.

1. Relaxed, friendly, positive human interaction.

I have never felt so relaxed and calm in a Metropolis City like I did in Stockholm. Noise, hectic pace, chaos, tensed people that we know from  witnessing in large cities, was nowhere to find in Stockholm. The Stockholmers seem to me, are striving to live a very balanced life, to be satisfied with themselves and their fellow-men. In addition, they are also very nice, patient, respectful and friendly with each other and also with the tourists. The goal of the Stockholmers, as it seems, is to enjoy life in a harmonious, happy atmosphere. A friendly, quiet approach to life is a clear contribution to this goal. Although I found myself in a big city, this incredible silence was everywhere, the people took their time, they communicated in a whisper to allow the others to enjoy their lives at the moment.

Maybe this is a reflection of the so called known lifestyle trend „Lagom“  (a life of balance) which comes from Sweden? Or maybe it is the „Nordic Life Model“, which is responsible for this beautiful phenomenon. There is much social freedom and security for the Stockholmers, allowing many Swedes to relax, to live, to enjoy the time with the family and friends. When a nation feels socially supported, with a financially sustainable health care system, a universal childcare offer, a very long and well-paid parenting leave for both parents and almost free education for all, it can also relax into life. Since I do not live in Stockholm, I can, of course, only witness this from what is read and heard on the topic. What I know for sure, is that it feels so healthy when you are surrounded by nice, relaxed people who radiate confidence in themselves and a trust in life. In addition, I found, despite the visible social stratification, that people do not communicate judgmental on others, no arrogance is visible here.

2. The „Nordic Social Concept“.

The Stockholm residents master the modest feeling of self-confidence. It is not cool in Stockholm to be avant-garde and colourful, striking in behaviour. People are not interested in entering a room and immediately attracting attention. What they appreciate though, is when someone comes close enough to get to know them properly and discover the quality of their persona and style. This philosophy reflects well my reserved personality. Hense, I feel natural in this culture. In sense of fashion, Stockholmers feel comfortable in basics of a good quality and from a good brand, dressed in neutrals and „blacks“, „ton in ton“, urban. Also with this concept Stockholm won me, as I can celebrate my minimalist wardrobe with comfort here. It is the belief that the clothes should not distract from the natural human beauty which I admire.

DE:

1.Entspannter, netter, ruhiger menschlicher Umgang.

3. „Fika“.

“Fika“ in Swedish is the word that describes a coffee break with a pastry in the company of nice people, it is a daily tradition, an important social concept, which probably also contributes to the happy balanced Stockholmers. Fika is about taking a break from the routine and take the time to talk with colleagues, friends or family about positive issues with ease over a cup of coffee and pastry. The important thing here, is simply to enjoy the moment. The Swedes have a great love for good Coffee. I’ve really experienced the way a customer is standing at the coffee shop and tastes different cups of her morning coffee to find the right one. The people standing in line behind her and the salesman were all witnessing this patiently. In the same coffee shop, I have experienced the most beautiful „Long Brew“ ritual. Usually, I really have to force myself to enjoy a filter coffee, only here, the slow and properly prepared Chemex filter-coffee tasted just right. After this experience, starting a day without this quiet time with the pure black coffee and the cinnamon cardamom pastries was a sad thought for me.

I enjoyed this morning ritual in the Johan & Nyström Coffeeshop in the Södermalm district of Stockholm. For the nice selection of pastries, I chose the „Fika“ at the Vete-Katten pastry shop for the lunch time and can gladly recommend this.

3. „Fika“

4. A Metropolis surrounded with water.

Stockholm is called the „Venice of the North“. During the boat tour around the „Archipelago“ (which I truly recommend to take on your Stockholm visit), I heard a funny statement: „Now, while Venice is sinking, Stockholm’s land is coming up.“ Stockholmers love to fish, swim and even swim naked, right in the center of town. On a sunny day, I was able to sit at the boat terminals, enjoy the water and the skyline. What is special about Stockholm, are the different quarters, which are connected with or through the water like small islands.

Stockholm tips

Some additional Stockholm Tips:

Visit the photography gallery „Fotografiska“! On the top floor, is a cafe and restaurant (very special interior and nordic cuisine, both very impressive) with large windows, where an incredible view from above over the beautiful Stockholm skyline at the water is to be found.

You might also enjoy to visit the Östermalms Saluhall (Food Hall) – originally opened in 1880s is considered to be one of the most beautiful food markets in the world, here you can enjoy the finest food you can imagine – from local seafood to hand made chocolate pralines.

The last tip I have for you today, is to enjoy a drink or dinner at „Bleck“ in the Södermalm district on a summer evening. We sat at a beautiful rustic terrace under oak trees, warmly lit with twinkling fairy lights and live DJ music in the middle of the „Lilla Blecktornsparken“ park. Culinary, I was so pleased at Bleck. It was a beautiful atmosphere full of looseness and amidst a mixed crowd, all of whom came to spend the evening in relaxed enjoyment. Children were playing in the park, while their parents dined quietly, young people were sitting in groups on the wooden stairs and engaged in conversations. Since Bleck is open up to 1 clock at night, it is simply a perfect place to transit from the evening to night.

There are still so many reasons to mention to love Stockholm, such as the convenience of not having to carry cash around. No, please do not misunderstand me, all the good in Stockholm has a relatively high monetary value, now what’s cool is that, in Stockholm everything is can be payed with the card. This is quite convenient. I could also continue to talk about the works of art in the T-bana Metro that seemed to me like an underground mountain labyrinth, and tell about the tennis courts in the center of the city that are there for the public use. Now for this article I focus on the four above mentioned reasons to love Stockholm.

It is clear that we, as tourists, always have a romantic view of the places we visit. When we have lived in a city, only then, we begin to notice it’s little quirks. But what we can take with us as a gift, is to bring with us home that which impressed us, and keep it alive. So I will carry the peace and kindness, the confidence in life and the idea of celebrating the „here and now“ in me.
